ISPs
It was startling to realize that, using our limited and slow search techniques, we were able to find over fifty machines at internet service providers which are blocked outright. Often, separate users' accounts are hosted on the same machine. Instead of blocking one user's directory, the software, in these cases, has the potential to block much, much more.
As with the sites in the Introduction, we have spent hours looking for any sexually explicit material these server machines might have, asking search engines to scan the sites, and checking the sites themselves by hand. None of these listed contained much if any material that would qualify in either the FullNude or the SexActs categories.
Liberty Information Network. The system administrator comments that this machine "has been one of our main ISP web servers, housing approx. 200 customers in subdirectories." FullNude SexActs.
ctol.net. Over 170 pages. FullNude SexActs.
Digibel, a Belgian service provider. As the administrator put it: "more than 50 sites are hosted on the machine; this means more than 1000 interesting pages won't be available to anyone using this piece of crap software." FullNude SexActs.
members.tripod.com. Similar to GeoCities, Tripod allows users to create their own websites. According to the Tripod home page, there are 1.4 million webpages on members.tripod.com.
One point four million.
Tripod's membership signup makes it quite clear: "Tripod does not allow Web pages containing sexually explicit material, nudity, or pirated software." And their Terms of Service go farther, prohibiting "pages that exploit the images of children ... material that is grossly offensive ... pages that promote illegal activity ... material that defames, abuses or threatens others ... pages that contain material inconsistent with the values of the spirit of the Tripod Community."
None of this helps the users who abide by these terms. All 1.4 million pages are blocked not just as FullNude SexActs but through the entire spectrum: Militant/Extreme Quest/Illegal/Gamble Booze/Cigs Violence/Profanity PartNude FullNude SexActs Gross Intol Cult Druggy.
www.market-tek.com. FullNude SexActs.
4thcoast.com. Over 40 pages. FullNude SexActs.
phantom.datamg.com. Even this ISP's strict content policy -- pages cannot have "anything obscene" -- didn't save it from being classified as FullNude SexActs.
winserve.seker.es. A Spanish bulletin-board system. Contains a link to "XXX-Files" on another site, but this site doesn't get any racier than a Babylon 5 discussion forum. FullNude SexActs.
shisas.co.za. A South African service provider, hosting webpages for 45 users; the administrator estimates "only two contain any material I would classify PartNude and FullNude." FullNude SexActs.
Yoyo is "a student run server at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia" with 5,000 student accounts and over 6,000 web pages. Every page is blocked as FullNude SexActs.
Stansworld. FullNude SexActs. The administrator comments:
"At one time Stansworld did have an adult site, but it was removed to its own domain (www.rocksworld.com) several months ago. Stansworld was then converted to a full business site. Presently there are no links or any adult content on this domain."
www.webhaven.com. Over 350 pages. FullNude SexActs.
JDV Enterprises. FullNude SexActs.
www.dada.it. Over 1300 pages. FullNude SexActs.
cyberhost4.com. This single entry in Cyber Patrol's database blocks the IP number 192.41.33.193. Such a block covers 50 web sites, including a toxicology consulting firm and a diesel engine part manufacturer, blocking them all as FullNude SexActs.
Some of the sites appear to have moved to a different IP address since the list at cyberhost4.com was last updated, so all 50 sites may not be blocked. Notably, the one site which was likely to be sexually explicit -- blackbutt.com -- has moved to another address, so this entry blocks only innocent webpages, and no explicit material.

Update: dreamon.com was formerly on this list without comment, but we were informed that it hosted adult sites as of May 1997. It doesn't appear to anymore, but pending further information it's been removed from our list. 12/23/97
Update: www.satisfaction.simplenet.com and instantaccess.net, also formerly on this list without comment, were also removed, and should not have been listed in the first place. As we had predicted, most of the rest of these sites were unblocked. Some, surprisingly, were not. Our aftermath analysis goes into detail. 12/25/97
